Route: Washintong IrvingWashington Irving (1783-1859) was a writer and diplomatic American whose name was given to this route. This romantic traveller, who was member of the diplomatic body of the United States in Madrid between years 1826 and 1829, crossed Andalusia uniting the main cities of the west and east Andalusia. From the notes taken from that trip and stories inspired by his stay in Granada he created the work Stories of the Alhambra 1832, that still today continues enjoying great popularity.

During the route we will slide throughout two fluvial valleys, the one of the Guadalquivir and the one of its main affluent, the Genil, until arriving at the skirts of the Penibetic mountain range where is Granada. The route crosses three provinces; Seville, Malaga and Granada. We will leave from the historical city of Seville, birthplace of important civilizations like Tartessos, Romans, Visigodos and Musulmanes. It was reconquered by king Fernando III for the Christians in 1248 and happened to be after the discovery of America economic center of the Spanish Empire, thanks to the navigability of the Guadalquivir.

The historical area of the city is one of most extensive of Europe and its historical and monumental patrimony attracts multitude of tourists. The city is located in the valley of the Guadalquivir, the largest river of Andalusia. Surrounded by territories of countryside to the south and the east, and by the elevations of the region of the Aljarafe to the west, to the north the fertile valley of the Guadalquivir goes to the mountain range. We will enjoy agricultural landscapes by the Sevillan countryside and the fertile valley of Granada, historical localities like Carmona, Osuna, Antequera and Loja and of the mountain landscapes by the granadina province like the mountain range of Parapanda in the neighbourhood of Montefrio, from here and with Sierra Nevada as avisual reference we descend until the city of Granada.
